2 years ago, I was having surgery to remove melanoma from my leg along with some lymph nodes to see if the cancer had spread.
Today is my 2 year cancerversary! This morning I took engagement photos for my friend, who is getting married this year and brought home a rescue kitten to join our family. And tonight, I am going to edit some photos, and spend some time with my family, who have been so supportive through out the last 2 years. Without them, I would not have pursued my passion in photography, and I would not be running a successful photography business!
Quite a difference a couple of years make! I count the years since my diagnosis and each one has special meaning as I continue to be melanoma free. I haven't forgotten how easily it could have been worse. I am truly living my life to the fullest!
I have had many friends pass away from melanoma, and I have many of their families tell me that they wish they would have gotten portraits with them instead of always saying, "I need to lose some weight first."
Take it from me, just get the pictures done. Now. The moments pass by so quickly. We aren't given a "do-over". Once the moment has passed, it is gone forever.
In honor of my 2 year mark, and for all of my friends who bravely fought melanoma, I would like to offer a discounted package for new clients only. The session includes a full 1 hour of shooting with your family, (up to 5 people, more is extra), at an outdoor location of your choice (Southeast MI area), (2 locations is extra)for only $70. This will include a CD of high resolution photos (15-30portraits) with full print release. Prints are extra.

I am finding this out as my own children are growing. My daughter (my youngest!) turned 18 last week and she is graduating high school in 4 weeks. (!) Time doesn't wait for us to change.

Mommy & Me Sessions
Today is the first day of the Mommy & Me sessions!
It is a gorgeous day here in Michigan and I am so excited about the photo shoot! We have several Mom's who are also excited to have portraits taken with their little ones!
My next Mommy & Me session is April 28th and I still have some available session times!
$50 for the outdoor session, and a cd of 10-15 edited portraits and an 8 x 10, 2- 5x7's, and 8 wallets of your favorite pose!
In time for Mother's Day! Makes a great gift for Mom!
*I also have gift certificates which also make a great gift for Mother's day!

Photography by Melissa at Royal Oak High School Graduation Marketplace Event
I was contacted Monday to be a part of the Graduation Marketplace Event at Royal Oak High School on April 17th, 2013. My first instinct was to pass this up since I had such limited time to prepare but, my daughter talked me into going and I am so glad she did! It was a great opportunity for me!
The event was geared towards Royal Oak parents as a one-stop shopping for 2014 Seniors. Some of the other vendors included, catering by Blackfinn American Saloon, Famous Dave's Barbeque, Lockharts BBQ, and YaYa's Flame Broiled Chicken. Entertainment by ACME Partyworks, AirTime Trampoline & Game Park, Goofy Faces, and Play 1st Mobile Gaming, and many more! Nick at Night who will be DJ at Royal Oak's Prom, was also there and was very helpful to me setting up with an extra extension cord. (thanks!) The vendors were all very nice and I had a great time meeting some awesome people!
I made a lot of new contacts and have booked several new clients for portrait sessions already!
And for my first event, I think it went pretty good!
Next year I hope the marketing is a little better. I am a Royal Oak high school parent and had no idea about this event.
Overall it was a great event. I am sure it will grow every year, and I hope to be a part of it every year!

Boudoir Session!!
I am putting together a glamour/boudoir session in a local Bed and Breakfast with a hairstylist and makeup artist. Delicious hors d'oeuvres and drinks included! You get to dress up and get pampered and you will get beautiful portraits of the session!

The Olivia Act

Olivia
was one of the many children murdered on the morning of December 14 at
the hands of a gunman who entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in
Newtown, Connecticut. (Above picture is not of Oliva). The Olivia Act, appropriately named after this
young girl, was born in response to this terrible event and is dedicated
to those who perished and the families affected.
Olivia's family had photos made shortly before she was taken, revealing the importance of having lasting memories of your loved ones. In honor of those who perished, the founder of the act was moved to give away a 30 minute family photo shoot and now challenges other photographers to do the same.
I will be following suit with this act. All families do not have resources available to have photos taken every year. I will be taking nominations from you for a family that you deem is deserving of this gift of memories up to March 31, 2013.
The quick details:
*One winner will be selected based off of the best submissions.
*The session will take place after May 30, 2013.
*The session will be up to one hour long.
*The winners will receive digital images on a DVD of no less than 10 images.
*Your Nomination should be at least 100 words long and should include who you are nominating and why.
*The family needs to live within a one hour drive for me. (Detroit,Michigan)
*The family chosen will be contacted via email, so please include that as well.
Nominations are limited to one per individual and I’ll be taking them anytime between now and March 31st, 2013.

Henry James~Newborn Session
